Favourite Food Movies
There have been many wonderful movies about food. High on my list of favourites is Chocolat, with the wonderful Johnny Depp, and Juliette Binoche as the magical chocolate maker. Another movie I watch at least once a year is Moonstruck with Nicholas Cage as the passionate bread maker romancing a luminous Cher under the spell of a full moon.
I love movies and books that revolve around food, and I have discovered New Zealander Sarah-Kate Lynch through her marvellous novel By Bread Alone. This stars another passionate bread maker, red-haired vital Esme, whose brief affair with a french boulanger left her hungry for more than his sourdough bread. Lynch writes in a style that is truly succulent and delicious, and even includes a recipe for Esme’s mouth watering sourdough at the end of the book. I never knew you could make sourdough starter with apple juice. Now I can’t wait to try it.
Happily for me, Lynch has written two other novels, including Blessed Are The Cheesemakers - what wonderful titles!
