I am a great proponent of taking your own pictures for use in graphic artwork or blogging. It’s so easy to do with a digital camera and it solves copyright issues. I love my digital and take it everywhere.
A while back I was thinking about taking my camera out and getting some interesting shadows, textures and shapes. But no matter what I did my abstract images never seemed to inspire me. What was my problem, I wondered?
I have a four-year-old grand daughter called Adria, who loves to borrow my camera and take picures. She is careful with it, usually taking snaps of her parents and siblings that turn out quite well. But often she just takes snaps of anything that takes her fancy, and while some of it is hard to identify, the results have been amazing.

This ghostly image is one of her Aunties – already it has me thinking stories.
I now have a file called Adria’s Abstracts, where I dig around for story ideas and graphic art components. For example, this one would make a great background:

And this one suggests a space story – it looks like a wormhole:

So what is Adria doing right that I was doing wrong? I think I was just too conscious of `being artistic’ and trying too hard. Adria is utterly unselfconscious, and just snaps away for the love of it. So her abstract images have an uninhibited sense of joy about them, they are not studied in any way. I’ll be sharing our collaborations in future blogs.

Adria has a rare talent! I haven’t really seen abstracts with a camera, but these really are quite lovely. I can’t wait to see more!
These are very cool!. My partner and I are both photographers and encourage the kids a lot. They’re into self portraits at the moment, and I have to say for such small children, they are pretty awesome! Kids tend not to overthink everything, they just ‘do’.
wow!!! I wonder what she does that creates these images! they’re so blurry-dreamy. like explosions of ire or mist.
A four-year old took these?! These are amazing!
Adria has an artistic future ahead of her. She has the eye.

Adria has a rare, juciy talent! Good onya, Miss A!
Stunning pictures indeed – leave it to the children eh, as you say tis the lack of inhibition or consciousness I think…these are wonderful
Vi, yes weagree. She is vey like her mother in her passion for making art. Aexis – we have discovered she knows a few tricks- like she presses the display button, which apparently gies a blurry image (I wish I knew as much about my camera as she does lol!).
Wonder which Aunty that was. She is indeed very clever. Took me 5 years to work out exposure time on my camera. Maybe I should give it to lyta and let her explain it all to me, LMAO!
I really like these pictures very much. I have also had some pictures turn out blurry with pretty effects. You can get some cool shots from a moving car if you take something close by, not long shots. Thanks for sharing these with us.
these look so interesting, it is really absorbing to experiment, hope you are well gail, only just came across this post.
